The only thing inevitable in love
I knew from the start that he was going to wreck me.
Nothing could have prepared me for the day he walked into my life…
or the day he walked out of it.
All that remained was a shell of the girl I once was.
And I don’t know if I’ll ever recover.
Interview with Phoenix
1. The first time you saw Ivy what went through your head?
It’s not so much what went through my head as it was what coursed through every fiber of my being. When it came to Ivy, there was never a choice. Ever since I first saw her I knew there was no turning back. I was a goner.
2. Give us one word that best describes Ivy.
It. She just is … was … and always will be “it” for me. Damn, that’s fucking
3. What’s number one on your bucket list?
If you asked me a few months ago I would’ve said swimming in the Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. But now? Now I’d love nothing more than to take Ivy on a surprise trip through Europe to see the Louvre, the Guggenheim and Tate Modern. I know how important all that is to her and I love watching her in her element.
4. What’s your best quality?
My devilishly handsome good looks? Just kidding. Honestly though, I think it’s just the fact that I’m just a good guy. My mom raised me to be the kind of guy that a girl should want to bring home to her parents. I know I’m not perfect and I’ve fucked up in the past, but I think those mistakes have helped me appreciate what I have in front of me even more.
5. If someone is going to pick up a book why should they choose your story?
For starters, this isn’t really my story. It’s Ivy’s. I’m just fortunate enough to be a part of it. But you should choose Love Nouveau because it’s not really a story at all. It’s real life. I’m not some billionaire or rebel on a bike. Ivy isn’t some perfect little virgin. We’re human. We’re flawed. We make mistakes and we live with those consequences…just like you. The path Ivy and I have taken has been long and emotional. But the road to what you want is often the hardest one to take.
6. If you could be a superhero which would you be and why?
When I was little I used to pretend I was Superman…fly in, save the day, and be everyone’s hero. But now I think I would want to be Flash simply for his ability to travel through time. I’d like to go back and right some wrongs. Being a hero isn’t always about rescuing someone from danger. It’s about doing the right thing, no matter how much it hurts.
7. What song reminds you most of Ivy?
So there’s this little band out of Chicago called Sleeping At Last. Earlier this year they released an album of cover songs…songs that you wouldn’t think would make good cover songs…Total Eclipse of the Heart, Safety Dance, songs like that. Well, the first song on the album is a cover of the Proclaimers I’m Gonna Be. You know the one…I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more…and those damn da-da-da-da’s get stuck in your head for hours on end. Well, this cover…holy shit, it’s beautiful. And perfect. And it is exactly how I feel about Ivy. She makes me want to be a better man.
Last but not least….we’ve gotta know….what the hell did you do?
I was really hoping you weren’t going ask that since I really struggle with how to respond. All I can say is I’m a guy…and all guys do stupid shit. Some shit is more forgivable than others. But I can only hope that when it all comes to a head Ivy finds it in herself to forgive me. Because if she doesn’t, I have no clue what I’m going to do without her.
